The Southern Forests Campdraft is an excellent weekend for competitors and spectators and all members of the public are invited, for free, to watch both local and national riders demonstrate high standards of horsemanship and skill in this very historic and popular competition.
Over the three days, competitors of all ages will compete in the Open Horse, Restricted Open, Maiden, Novice, Junior and Juvenile drafts.
Campdrafting is the fastest growing horse sport in Australia, it’s also the second largest horse sport and is the only sport where all ages, genders and abilities can compete together. Campdrafting is a uniquely Australian sport which is enjoyable for the whole family. The best combination of control of the beast, riding skills, speed and completing the course scores the highest points, and the ability of the horses, combined with breathtaking horsemanship, makes campdrafting a sport for both competitors and spectators.
Campdrafting requires excellent skill and horsemanship, the rider must cut out one beast from the mob of cattle in the camp and block and turn the beast to prove to the judge that they have the beast under control. They then take it out of the camp and around a pegged course involving right and left hand turns in a figure eight, before guiding it through the gate. The skill and ability of both horses and riders in the Campdraft arena is phenomenal and we want everyone to experience the thrill of the competition and the wholesomeness of the atmosphere
